All time worst ever ends to a Cardiff City season

By finishing the 2006/07 campaign without a win in their last nine games, Cardiff City match the club's worst-ever winless run to end a season. In fact, this is the third time that the club has finished winless in their last nine.

The 1928/29 season saw the Bluebirds finish without a win in their last nine, drawing four and losing five. After beating Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 at home on March 9, City moved up to 19th in the Division One table, two spots above the relegation zone. They wouldn't win again. Going without a win over their last nine proved very costly too, as it left the club in 22nd (and last) place with a record of eight wins, 13 draws, and 21 defeat. Their 29 points left them seven points from safety. It would be another 31 years before City would play another game in the First Division.

Oddly enough, it was in their first season back in top-flight football, in 1960/61, that City matched the 1928/29 outfit's record for end-of-season futility. After beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 before 45,463 at Ninian Park on March 11, City found themselves in sixth place in Division One, their highest position of the year. These Spurs were the famed double winners too, by the way. Who would have guessed that this glorious win would be their last of the campaign? It was, though. Three draws and six defeats in their last nine dropped them to 15th, with a record of 13-11-18. The last home game, a 1-1 draw with West Ham on April 22, attracted only 9,549. The next year, City finish 21st and are relegated.

To sum up, City's finishing without a win in nine only matches the club's record for the longest winless run to end a season. The two points over the last nine does set a club mark, however, as the 0-2-7 finish just edges the 1960/61 side's 0-3-6 windup.

So from the last 9 games in the seasons mentioned we ended

1928 / 29 we ended W0 - D4 - L5
1960 / 61 we ended W0 - D3 - L6
2006 / 07 we ended W0 - D2 - L7

The season ended with City in the bottom half of the table. Quite incredible considering at one point we were six points clear at the top and even going into those last 9 games we were 13 points clear of 13th place which is where we ended up.
