Croft speaks ahead of signing

Gary Croft has told todays Western Mail that his best is yet to come. The 28 year old should complete his free transfer from Ipswich today. Croft agreed personal terms last Friday and then had his medicals yesterday. Croft will join up with the rest of the City squad at Lilleshall after his signing.

"The Cardiff fans didn't see the best of me last season. There's definitely more to my game.

"Before I came here last season I hadn't played first-team football for a while. No matter how many reserve games you play it's not the same as playing first-team football.

"And because I wanted to do well for Cardiff I erred on the side of caution. I didn't do the more adventurous things I know I'm capable of.

"I know I can do better going forward, but your game develops the more you play with your team-mates. You develop an understanding which you can't do when you're on loan for, say, five or six games."

"I've missed out on regular first-team football recently but I'm still the same player that I was a few years ago when people were saying I might go on and play for England.

"I'm just as fit and nothing bad has happened to me - I haven't had any bad injuries. Hopefully I can recapture my old form with Cardiff."

Croft was transferred from Grimsby to Blackburn for £1.7m in 1995 and Ipswich paid £800,000 for him from Blackburn in 1999. Croft became the first player to be electronically tagged after being convicted of motoring offences. He's put all that behind him now and is looking forward to helping Cardiff City achieve promotion.

Croft ended last season by scoring the winner for City at Tranmere. Because of the passing and movement involved it would have to rate as one of City's best goals of the season. Not bad considering he was playing at left back.
