Free scoring City move into Carling Cup 3rd round

Last updated : 27 August 2009 By Michael Morris
Bristol Rovers were the latest side to be despatched at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Cardiff have played two League games and two Carling Cup games in the new ground and have a goal scoring record of F 13, A 2.

Michael Chopra, after missing several chances, scored City's opener. Good pressure from the City frontline forced Rovers to lose possession and Chopra was in on goal from the left and cooly slotted home with his right foot.

Kelvin Etuhu on his full debut was helping Chops to keep the Rovers defence on their toes. The domination of the first half only produced the one goal though.

Rovers, backed bt a decent away following - best we've seen so far at CCS, saw a bit more of the ball in the 2nd half but they were still 2nd best in quality and City made their class pay with a 2nd goal. Burke raced in from the right, crossed low and the keeper could only parry for Whittingham to place the ball into the net.

As with the game against Dagenham City allowed their visitors to stay in the match. A free header was put away from a Rovers corner.

Normal service was resumed though when John Magennis scored his first senior goal. The Northern Irish youngster reacted to nod through the Rovers keeper with 4 mins remaining. Game over.

The draw for round 3 (which includes the top Premier League sides) takes place just after 12 noon on Saturday.
