Lennie's tribute to Leo

Last updated : 30 May 2003 By Michael Morris
"He's been a good servant and what impresses me about Leo is though he's not been involved much since Christmas, he's kept himself right."

Leo was released this week after 3 years at Ninian Park, his two most noticeable moments came firstly at York City when his hat trick earned a point that took City up from Div 3 to Div 2 followed by the knockdown that saw Scott Young fire home to beat Leeds Utd in the FA Cup.

Leo has achieved a sort of cult like status and is either loved or hated. There is though no doubting his effort and committment even if his skill levels sometimes leave a lot to be desired.

Lennie continued

"He's got good mental strength and he's kept himself right physically, unlike one or two otherplayers. He hasn't been involved bacause Peter Thorne has been strong and Gavin Gordon has emerged a little bit as a substitute. But I've been impressed with the way he has conducted himself and that's why I put him in the squad for the play off final. He is 32 and he's got three or four years left in him, so he needs to move on and play first team football."

Lennie has little doubt he will find a new club

"Of all the players I have released he will have the least trouble getting fixed up bacause we must have had 10 calls for him before the deadline this season."

Gethin Jones may still have a future with Cardiff City. He is technically a free agent and is free to sign for another club but Lennie says

"We've done something slightly different with Gethin. Technically he's a free agent and he needs to go and play first team football. He is a good ladand he has definately got something - although he has got an enormus amount to do to get in here - so I have left the door open for him.

"I hope he gets fixed up somewhere else, but if he doesn't then he would be welcome back here pre - season for two reasons. Firstly because he's never really had a chance due to the injury problems he has had
(Gethin broke his leg in a reserve team game), and secondly becuase he is such a good lad."

Gareth Ainsworth and Steve Jenkins could also return to Ninian park after being released but both are urged to find new clubs. Lennie does not want to have them on the books as he looks to strengthen, should budgets allow one or both could be offered a position for next season.
