Wales 1 - 0 Canada. A fairytale winner for Paul Parry

Last updated : 31 May 2004 By Michael Morris
It's a storyline Roy of the Rovers would be proud of. Non league player gets chance in Division 1, he impresses enough to warrant an international call and sits on the bench at the Millennium Stadium. An injury to a player on the pitch means he gets a chance to come on. His first contribution sets up a goal. A month or two later and he's starting a Wales game for his full debut, less than 6 months after leaving the Conference. Then when it can't get any better he starts his second full game and scores the winner for Wales over Canada.

Parry said after the game

"I started the season dreaming of things like scoring goals and playing for Wales. It is hard to imagine that I have actually achieved that now by the last game of the season.

"I find myself playing alongside people like Ryan Giggs and I have to pinch myself. Mark Hughes has told me to go out and play without fear, and I hope that is what I have done."

Paul Parry must be walking on air.

Congratulations.

It was a big day for Martyn Margetson as well. Aged 32 after years of waiting and probably years of never expecting the chance he played the second half to earn his first Wales cap.

Daniel Gabbidon and James Collins played together in central defence and contributed to a second clean sheet in a row. Robert Earnshaw replaced Parry in the second half to keep 4 City players on the pitch.

Well done to all five players.
