Robertson enjoying deeper role as Cardiff look to adapt to Championship

Alex Robertson says he is enjoying the challenge of playing in a deeper midfield role after being given increased defensive responsibilities by Cardiff City head coach Brian Barry-Murphy.

The Australia international made 38 appearances for the Bluebirds last season and has now been deployed further back in midfield, where he has been encouraged to develop the defensive side of his game.

Robertson believes the support of Cardiff's coaching staff has helped him adapt to the change.

"I'm just learning every day. I've got a great coach and staff to learn and develop from," Robertson said.

"I keep trying to play as many games as I can, and as many minutes as I can. I feel in a good place and I quite enjoy playing deep.

"I get a bit more of the ball, but as long as I'm playing I don't really mind."

His performances in the new position have also impressed Barry-Murphy, who believes Robertson has made significant progress since the start of the campaign.

"I'm very pleased with him, his progress has been outstanding," said the head coach.

With Ryan Wintle having departed, Barry-Murphy sees Robertson as a key creative outlet, while also looking for him to become more disciplined defensively.

"Since Ryan Wintle left, the focus has been on Alex as a very creative player who has helped us so much going forward.

"We are just making him really aware of the defensive side of the game so that he can really help make us more secure.

"We're a very attacking team but we also have to be strong defensively."

Cardiff have found their return to the Championship difficult so far, with four draws and two defeats from their opening six matches.

Robertson accepts there has been an adjustment period for a squad containing several players who are experiencing the second tier for the first time.

"There are quite a few boys that hadn't played in the Championship until this season," said Robertson ahead of Saturday's trip to Bolton Wanderers.

"It's going to take a bit of time to adapt and the way we play is obviously special. It's different to most teams.

"We need to keep trying to adapt to the league and the differences from last season, but we're coming good and hopefully we can get over the line and just keep pushing on."
