Award for Bluebirds Downunder

Last updated : 28 February 2006 By Michael Morris
BLUEBIRD’S DOWNUNDER have been recognised by the Welsh Society of Sydney for their significant contribution to the Welsh community in Australia. Club Captain Richard Jeffery accepted the award on behalf of all club members at the St David’s Day Dinner held in Leichardt last Friday evening. Speaking at the presentation, society spokesperson Brian Cokely congratulated BDU on the positive way they represented Cardiff City in Australia, and in particular for the fund-raising initiatives organized in Sydney and Melbourne, raising over $5000 for cancer research. BDU were presented with a framed picture of John Charles leading Wales onto Ninian Park for an international match. Captain Rich said that the award will take pride of place in Cardiff City Corner at The Kauri Hotel, the home of BDU in Sydney.

Here is a copy of the February 2006 Newsletter.

If you are one of the many BDU’ers who have been contacting me over the last few weeks asking, Captain, what’s going on, when are we getting together for a drink or two, fear not……Bluebirds Downunder is up and running again after the Christmas break. Your Captain has a new computer, and I almost lost all my BDU contact details as a result, but all saved now and ready to rumble. Dave Ferguson up in Brissie is working hard on getting the website back in good order.

So, anyway, it’s time to meet up again, to get some chat going about what’s been happening at Ninian Park, and generally have a good South Wales/Cardiff City evening. Povz has the video ready to send, and we have a few other surprises coming around.

So, here’s all the dates and the venues

MELBOURNE - Friday 24 February

First cab off the rank is the Mexicans, who are planning a gathering at the Celtic Club in central Melbourne. This one will not be for the faint hearted, as the lads are just coming down after following the Melbourne team in the A League all season (although a few court appearances are still outstanding apparently.) Bluebird Jones tells me the guv’nor is going out if his way to make them welcome, and has offered the big screen for viewing. Be there about 7.30pm onwards for a great evening.

Celtic Club details are at http://www.celticclub.com.au/

BRISBANE - Friday 3 March

Hopefully the BDU lads in Brissie will have recovered by now from the gathering we had on the Gold Coast late last year, and will be ready to make some more noise, this time at Union Jacks Club in downtown Brisbane. The club has a special Welsh corner and the lads will be doing their best to show that the No #1 Football Team in Wales also has the best supporters in Oz. (Jacks are welcome to come along as well – if only so they can see what we mean.) Come along and celebrate St David’s Day – (2 days late)

SYDNEY - Friday 10 March.

The Kauri Hotel in Sydney, ancestral home of BDU in Australia, welcomes back all the lads and lasses for their first gathering of 2006. This will be a great chance to catch up with all your old mates and also to meet some of the new members who have arrived in Sydney in the last few months. All the usual craic and banter, plus Cardiff City on the big screen and the strong possibility of kicking on later in one of Sydney’s dens of sin and debauchery. – Not for your Captain, I have to be in bed by 11pm - doctors orders. If you want the cheapest accommodation in Sydney, contact Tristan at the Kauri, say your BDU, and he will fix you up a room for $30

SO, PUT THESE DATES IN YOUR DIARY NOW AND COME ALONG TO A CARDIFF CITY EVENING. THEY WILL BE A GREAT LAUGH, BUT ONLY IF YOUR THERE.

WELSH SOCIETY DINNER

Hope to see loads of you at the Welsh dinner in Norton St Leichardt on Feb 24th for a fun packed night. A great time was had by one and all last year. They are offering a four course meal, beer wine and soft drinks included. Kieren Blake's Welsh sporting Odyssey, Aneurin Hughes on the great John Charles and the best toast to St David you are ever likely to hear, a guest Musician from Wales, prizes and presentations and the chance to bid for a superb signed Welsh Rugby Jersey, a signed Welsh football jersey, 50 Gren cartoon cards celebrating the WRU centenary, John Charles signed photographs and a Dai cap signed by Brian’s Uncle Bryn (alright that last bit is not true, sorry). Let's make this an annual event to be respected by as many Welsh in Australia as possible.

Contact Capt Rich if you would like to join the Bluebirds Downunder table for this great evening. First in best dressed. 0409 913950 or avalonrj@msn.com.au. If you would prefer to bring your own group of 8 contact Brian Cokely on bmorgan@aapt.net.au or check out the website at www.bethnesaf.com

LITTLE WILLIE HILL IN WALES

BDU’s star striker Willie Hill is heading back to Wales this weekend to see his first City game since the early 70's, an F.A. Cup game at home against a Leeds side which included Bremner, Giles, Lorimer, Clarke etc. More senior members may remember that Cardiff City lost 0 - 2 but the crowd didn't mind too much as we put up a great effort. Will arrives in Cardiff Saturday morning and will be at the Stoke game that afternoon, proudly wearing his BDU shirt. So, for all you BDU’ers over there who will be at the game, please look out for (a very tired) Will and say hello. Main purpose of the trip is to take his Dad’s ashes back home…….Dad was a City supporter all his life………….RESPECT

BDU PERTH

Andy Allan over there is getting very close to organising the first BDU gathering in WA. If you know any City supporters over there or would like to attend a Perth gathering please contact Andy at aallen@bicton.royweston.com.au

ANOTHER GOOD MAN……….

Congratulations to Mike Kinglsey who is getting married on Friday 3 March in Sydney. We suggested he have his reception down the Kauri with the lads but the bride-to-be didn’t seem that keen. Also, congrats retrospectively to Jools Roderick who got married last August to the lovely Nat. Hope married life is being kind to you guys.

THE NEW STADIUM

Opening date for the new stadium now seems to be 2008, which seems a long way away but it isn’t really. BDU will be organizing a group to travel home for the first game at the new stadium and we already have a number of members interested. As soon as we know more about what’s happening, we will start making plans. Don’t want to get too keen too soon; last time we started organising it everything went pear-shaped back at Ninian Park. I am going over there in September this year and will use that trip as an opportunity to get a few things happening, eg complimentary seats for the opening game for all of us.

All the best

Captain Rich
