Bluebirds Downunder. Latest update.

Last updated : 24 April 2003 By Michael Morris
Whilst numbers were a bit down on previous gatherings, (no doubt caused by the SARS epidemic, the war, the temperature has dropped and the fact that it’s getting dark in the evenings – all pathetic excuses by the way), we were delighted to welcome four new members (pictured below) to the club. They are all now resident in Sydney, are life-long City supporters and are very keen to get involved with Bluebirds DownUnder in the future.

New members of Bluebirds DownUnder, L to R - Jason Addicott (Llanederyn), Leigh Davies (Merthyr Tydfil), Dean Bryant (Abertillery), Jon Watkins (Roath)

Jason, Leigh, Dean and Jon have already signed up for the Bluebirds DownUnder Football Team which has its first ‘friendly’ coming up against OzSpurs in Sydney in early June.

Other matches are being arranged with Leeds, Celtic & Nottingham Forest Supporters Clubs in Australia. Coach Steve ‘Buttocks’ Hewitson has already announced that he is confident that he can put together a team which will do the City proud.

Final voting took place for the New Player of the Season Award and whilst the winner is now known to a small number of people, the winners name has been put in a sealed envelope and has been sent by racing pigeon to David Povall back home in Newport. We are very much hoping that at the Supporters Club Presentation Night on the 26 April David will be allowed to make the award to the winning player. A PowerPoint presentation giving some information on our club has been sent to CCFC Supporters Club organiser Mark Watkins.

Sam’s choice – but will she pass muster with the lads?
The ‘Letter from Sam’ was read out to the appreciative group and whilst very little of it made sense it appears that he is keen for us to maintain the highest Welsh traditions by, as he puts it, being ‘heavily engaged in sheep shagging’ and taking full advantage of the fact that Australia has millions of sheep. His suggestion that ‘we take as our logo a ‘jolly sheep’ standing on its hind feet with its front feet (hands) up in a seductive way’ will be considered at a full meeting of the Organising Group. Personally I don’t fancy her chances as a logo but she could definitely make a great mascot, not to mention a pleasant bed-warmer !!!! A full copy of Sam’s letter will be posted on our Website. Thanks Sam.

More information on the Wales v Italy gathering. Russell (angrytaff) Mather has advised that we will be welcome guests at an Italian Club in Leichardt where the game will be shown either live or maybe a fifteen minute delayed coverage. Depending on the time of night supper or breakfast will be available and plenty of Italian vino, but no Brains. We have been offered 40 tickets however the price has not yet been fixed. Tickets can only be purchased by registered members of Bluebirds DownUnder, so, if you haven’t registered yet, do so as soon as possible. If you need a Registration Form just e-mail avalonrj@msn.com.au Registered members should also e-mail that address to confirm their interest. If we know what the level of interest is we will, if necessary, go back and try to get a bigger allocation of tickets. Otherwise, we may have to limit tickets to one per registered member.

We are keen to get a permanent ‘logo’ for Bluebirds DownUnder. We have short-listed four from a number that have been suggested and we will be asking members to vote on their preference. Send your vote for the one you like the most to avalonrj@msn.com.au The winner will be announced at our next gathering on 16 June. So get your votes in now.

That’s all for now. The focus is now on the remaining critical games. To the players, good luck, to the supporters we wish we could be with you, and to all you Bluebirds DownUnder, NEVER FORGET YOUR WELSH.

Cheers
