Bluebirds stadium athletics shock

Cardiff City today warned the club's future will be thrown in doubt unless changes are agreed to its planned £100m stadium development.

But the new proposals, due to be presented to Cardiff council next week, would leave athletes without a stadium - which is currently used by at least 20,000 people - for up to 11 MONTHS.

Developers want to start construction of the whole of the Leckwith development - including the football and athletics stadiums and retail park - at around the same time.

The original agreement to complete the new athletics stadium before demolishing the existing complex would mean the football ground could not be completed before June 2009 - a year's delay.

Developers say that would add £10m to costs and spell the end of City's dream of a 30,000-capacity ground.
