Freddie Sears scored in the 30th minute with the ball hitting the metal frame at the back of the goal and bouncing back onto the pitch.

Palace celebrated, Bristol City players held their heads before the referee consulted with his linesman and to everyones disbelief awarded a goal kick.

Shoebridge was due to be the referee at Home Park on Tuesday when City face Plymouth.

"He was scheduled to do a game in midweek. He won't be doing that. We have been working on that this morning. The ref has been spoken to," said Keith Hackett, general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Board.

The final insult to Palace came when Bristol City scored an 89th minute winner.
