Cardiff City v Sheffield Wednesday. Match preview

Last updated : 03 March 2006 By Michael Morris
Cardiff City welcome Sheffield Wednesday to Ninian Park this weekend with both clubs in need of points. For Cardiff a win is vital to keep a realistic chance of the play offs. For Wednesday it's a matter of survival. They sit just above the drop zone with a 5 point cushion. Crewe, Brighton and Millwall are all looking at Wednesday as the team they have to overhaul to try and save themselves.

On recent form City look likely winners but we've seen already this season that teams comes to Ninian Park looking to stiffle us and try to nick a goal. Millwall managed to pinch a point from us recently and Hull nearly managed it but in that game we were able to win the game 1 - 0.

In the last 6 matches played City have W2, D2, L2. Wednesday W1, D1, L4 three of their four defeats have come in the last three matches. On paper it's a home banker but we've been stung before.

The corresponding fixture at Hillsbrough was played in front of the Sky camera's, Cardiff produced a devastating first half to lead 3 - 0 at the interval. Cameron jerome (2) and Jason Koumas with the goals. The game ended 3 - 1 with City in control.

Owl's boss Paul Sturrock reflects on that 45 mins at Hillsbrough

"If there was one 45 minutes this season we had a torrid time, it was against Cardiff at home" he told their official website.

Dave Jones is likely to start with the XI who kicked off at Watford. He has no new injury worries and no players returning this week. Glen Loovens came through an hour of the reserves game in midweek and should start on the bench. The available squad is the same as last week.

City therefore are probably going to be

Alexander, Ardley, Purse, Cox, Barker, Koumas, Scimeca, Whitley, Ledley, Thompson and Jerome.

Subs from Margetson, Weston, Loovens, Boland, Mulryne, Ferretti, Nsungu.

Wednesday could offer a start to former Bluebird Deon Burton. It was just under a decade ago that Burton signed for City and scored twice on his Boxing Day debut as City beat Torquay 2 - 0. We had a huge 3,753 in Ninian Park that day for a Bank Holiday fixture. We may see 10,000 more than that at Ninian Park tomorrow with a decent sized support from South Yorkshire.

Wednesday could bring back Leon Best and Yoann Folly, both players were ineligible to face Southampton last week. As it was their line up for the 3 - 0 defeat at St Mary's was

Adamson, Simek, Bullen, Coughlan, Collins; Partridge (Burton 56), Whelan, O'Brien (Corr 74), Brunt; MacLean (McAllister 56), Tudgay. Subs not used: Kirby, Spurr.

Kick off is at 3:00pm on Saturday. Home fans can pay on the day, tickets for all parts of the ground available from the booths and ticket office while there is a cash turnstile for the Lower Bob Bank. City only have 4 more home matches after this one. Come along and offer your support. The play offs are still a possibility.
