Carmarthen 2 - 0 Cardiff City

It was a disappointing result against the LoW club with City failing to kill off a resolute Carmarthen team.

Carmarthen opned the scoring inside the opening 10 mins. In their first attack they were fortunate not be penalised for a foul on Chris Gunter but the attacker played on and crossed for Sacha Walters to head past young keeper Josh Herring.

The seond goal came from a very dodgy free kick. Glenn Loovens "knee'd" the ball back to keeper Herring but the referee decided it counted as a back pass and awarded Carmarthen a free kick in front of goal. It was poorly defended and Paul Fowler curled a right foot shot past the helpless Herring.

Tony Capaldi, Gavin Rae and Steve MacClean started their first games for City and in my opinion Capaldi looked a decent enough full back. He also has a long throw whhich could be useful. Rae didn't stand out in midfield. Darcy Blake was the central midfielder getting himself noticed with a committed performance. MacClean upfront showed some good touches and was denied by the Town keeper. Outside the box he makes space for himself and is will to take the ball but it would be good to see him sharpen up nearer the goal.

Also on the pitch was Constantinos Charalambides. The Cypriot international is on trial and he was a tricky player with quick feet, step overs and caused the Carmarthen left back some problems. He delivered quality ball into the box.

City dominated the game early on and the opening goal was against the run of play. The Town keeper was by far the busier of the two making some excellent saves. Josh Herring apart from picking the ball out of his net twice was hardly called upon.

Glen Loovens skippered the team which lined up

Herring, Gunter, Capaldi, Rae, Archeampong, Loovens, Charalambides, Blake, MacClean, Green and Ledley.

Several youngsters were on the bench with three or four seeing some action late on.

A crowd of just over 400 watched the game.

Carmarthen are now in Uefa Cup action against FC Brann of Norway. They will have boosted their confidence before facing the Norwegians. For City it'll be classed as just a run out with the result not that important but even so, we should be able to beat teams like Carmarthen (all due respect).

Pictures to follow.
