Comments from Malky Mackay

“I was very pleased. We were playing against a team who have been in Serie A for 11 of the last 12 years,” said Mackay.

“You have to be decent to do that. We knew it was going to be a step up again in terms of the technical ability of the opposition. They were physical too. They were very big and strong. It was more of a test in terms of what we are going to be looking for in the Premier League.

“It’s time for that now. The fitness work is coming to and end and it is about match preparation and match sharpness. So getting the win and the clean sheet was very much what we needed.”

Comments from Chievo boss Giuseppe Sannino

“I’m pleased with the defence of my team, especially with regard to the first time,” he said.

“We were solid and compact. Errors I’ve seen today are helpful, this way we can understand in which direction we must work to continue to grow.

“We take into account that the boys have been working very hard and have heavy legs.

“The brilliance, especially in our offence, will arrive soon.”
