The drop from the SPL to Division 2 has proved to be too big a jump for Tony Vidmar. The 33 year old Australian has rejected City's offer of a contract at Ninian Park.

Lennie Lawrence told the Echo

"Tony Vidmar is atop quality left back and we were all very impressed with his attitude during our negotiations. He agreed personal terms and everything was fine, but he felt a move to Division 2 was too much. Buth the fact we went so close to signing a player of that quality shows the ambition of Cardiff City."

It's now thought that Barnsley defender Chris Barker is the new target. Barker, 22, has played over 120 games in Division 1 for Barnsley. It's thought that Barnsley are asking £500,000 for the player but would accept a lower offer.

"Chris Barker is still very much among the names we are discussing" said City boss Lennie Lawrence.

Barnsley are rivals in Division 2 this season after being relegated in April. Barker may want a new challenge.

Former loan player Gary Crofthas not been ruled out. Croft is still under contract and training with Ipswich but it was reported at the end of the season that he was going to ask George Burley to release him so he could sign for City if they wanted him.
