City now 10th, Reading reaction

Last updated : 17 September 2003 By Michael Morris
City went to Reading last night backed by well over 3,000 fans. For an hour we watched City control the game and look the likely winners but then we flagged.

City's only crime in the first hour was not scoring more goals. After a couple of early Reading efforts City took over and Peter Thorne latched onto a pin point Kavanagh pass to slot the ball home for a 1 - 0 lead. Earnie went through one on one but the keeper saved, Langley found himself in sight of goal but he rushed his effort and lobbed the ball high and wide.

City passed and moved and looked very comfortable. Reading were restricted to a few shots that were straight at Alexander.

In the second half though we appeared to tire, Reading pushed on and City dropped deep. At this level you can't hope to invite teams onto you for 30 mins and not expect to get punished. Reading started to spread the ball around and get in behind City. The leveller came around the hour mark, Scott Murray flashed a cross into the box and Forster got the vital touch between two City defenders.

In my mind there was only going to be one winner then. The home support were woken up by the music that was played after their goal and finally they started to sing a little, until then Cardiff fans had provided all the noise.

Reading's winner was again set up by Murray. His layed off the ball into the path of Sidwell who hit an unstoppable rising drive from 20 yards and that was it. That came with 11 mins to go.

City did try to press but we were never going to score. The defeat was harsh, a draw would have been fair.

This week was always going to be tough. Reading last night, Sheff Utd to come on Saturday. The Blades thumped Rotherham 5 - 0 last night at Bramall Lane. Cardiff City have to pick themselves up and prepare for one of the toughest games of the season.

Wigan are the surprise new leaders of Division 1. They beat West Brom last night.
