City v Wigan. Match preview

Last updated : 09 April 2005 By Michael Morris
City face a massive task today when Wigan come to town.

City need to win to help avoid relegation, Wigan need to win to try and get automatic promotion. A draw is not a big enouth result for either team.

Cardiff are likely to remain unchanged. The Thorne / Jerome partnership that was so eadly at Stoke will get their chance against Wigan this afternoon. Michael Boulding and Alan Lee will both be on the bench.

City expected to line up

Alexander, Vidmar, Gadbbidon, Collins, Barker, McAnuff, Ledley, langley, Ardley, Thorne, Jerome.

Subs. Margetson, Wiliams, Boland, Lee, Boulding.

Wigan bring Graham Kavanagh back to Ninian Park. The sudden departure of the former City skipper shocked everyone but now he has a new club and being a professional he'll be looking to help his new team to promotion. He'll play with the highly rated Jimmy Bullard in midfield.

"It's going to be very strange if I score against Cardiff. If it happens, I definitely won't celebrate," Kav said

"But I'm not worried about scoring at Ninian Park. I'm paid by Wigan now. Cardiff made the decision to sell me."

Wigan also have former City loan player Alan Mahon in their squad and don't forget Gareth Whalley. The midfielder left City under a cloud because the Bluebirds stopped playing him when his appearance bonus was one game away.

Lennie believes that a City win today would all but secure our Championship status

"If we win we could be out of trouble because, in my opinion, 50 points, along with our goal difference, should be enough to stay up," Lennie told the Western Mail.

"If we beat Wigan I could see us finishing 14th or 15th which isn't far off of where we finished last season."

"Nottingham Forest, who are second from bottom, are seven points behind us, but with our superior goal difference it may as well be eight," he added.

"That means we have to lose three out of six with them winning three out of their six. Realistically, I can't see that happening.

"There's still that third from bottom spot and to avoid that you might need 50 points. But who knows, it could be 49, 48 or maybe 51.

"I'd be surprised, with our goal difference, if we needed more than that."

A crowd of over 17,000 is forecast after special offer ticket sales.

Let's hope Cameron Jerome can do the business with his lucky white boots

"I've tried other ones, but I always seem to do pretty well in those boots" Jerome told the Echo.

"I don't know why, but I've scored in them more often than my other boots - so I'm sticking with them for the rest of the season."
