Lennie Lawrence - on tonights game

"Last season we got knocked out at this stage of the competition at Spurs, but we are at home this time and it would be nice to make progress in the competition.

"It is possible to get to the latter stages of it. There is usually one big hurdle to overcome and with the luck of the draw and a bit of concentration, before you know it, you can be in the quarter-final.

"The league remains our priority, but one of the great things about being promoted to Division One is we don't enter the FA Cup until the third round stage and neither are we in the LDV Vans Trophy.

"That means the Carling Cup takes on more importance and if we treat West Ham like another league game and manage to get past them, then who knows what might happen."

"I have a lot of players who need a game - Spencer Prior, Layton Maxwell and so on - but I won't make six or seven changes for a game like this.

"I don't think that would be right. We're on Sky Sports, it's a high-profile game and we have to bounce back after losing two on the trot.

"In our last few games we have scored a lot of goals and our general play has been good, but we are conceding too many.

"If we can eradicate that against the likes of Defoe and Connolly that would give us some confidence." (Western Mail)

Trevor Brooking - after defeat at Gillingham last Saturday

"We are going to face difficult challenges all season and need to be more professional.

"West Ham is going to be a big game for all these clubs and in the case of Gillingham, they deserved to win because they had the greater desire.

"That is unacceptable and I have told the players what I want." (Evening Standard)

Daniel Gabbidon - on his return to the team

"I've been out for a few weeks now, so it's just nice to be back in the team and hopefully get some fitness back. It's going to be a tough game but I'm looking forward to it.

"West Ham are a very good side and have started quite well. They have some very good players, they've only just been relegated from the Premier League so they still have a lot of good players.

"It's going to be a good test. It's a cup game so there's no real pressure, we can just go out there and play.

"They have top-class players and you have to be on your toes. If you switch off for a second they can punish you.

"We have found out this season that the quality of finishing is a lot better. Maybe last season you could get away with missed chances but now we are getting punished for every mistake.

"We have to make sure that we are on the ball. Hopefully we can play fairly decently and we're at home so we might get a good result." (Western Mail)
