Colchester match reaction

Last night was not a trip for the faint hearted, a 460 mile round trip from Cardiff to visit possibly one of the least attractive grounds in the whole league.

Around 150-200 City fans were there to see a strong City side comfortably defeat their "League One" opponents to go into the hat for the second round draw.

City's side showed few changes from the defeat at Derby, a 4-4-2 formation

Alexander
Weston, Purse, Loovens, Barker
Koumas, Whitley, Boland, Cooper
Jerome, Lee

Very unlike the sides we put out in the early rounds of the competition last season when a number of youngsters were given a chance to stake their claim.

There's not really a full match report "Nigelblues" style to come out of this match, it was really very dull.

The game was pretty even until the penalty decision, Whitley was nudged inside the area and went down very easily, the referee showing no hesitation in awarding the spot kick. Purse dispatched it with ease.

The second goal was lovely, a nice layoff from Lee into Jerome's path before the youngster rounded the goalkeeper and blasted the ball home.

The game was over as a contest by half time at 2-0 and the second half was a non-event. The highlight was Purse changing his shirt to one without a number on it after a head injury, it really was that uninteresting!  Other points of note were Parry playing left back as Barker went off injured, and Koumas getting his first full game under his belt without really breaking sweat.

Apparently the draw is on Saturday afternoon on Sky, second round ties to be played w/c 19 September.

City move on to more important matters this Saturday with a home game against Dave Jones' old side Wolverhampton Wanderers. 3pm kick off at Ninian Park, tickets on sale now.
