Croft's Original. Website reaction to victory in Milton Keynes

.. but it was well worth it.

As I walked back to my car with my two kids shivering and coughing from the cold and rain I helped them out of their complimentary waterproof poncho's and explained how they helped make history.

They had just witnessed Cardiff City's first ever visit to Milton Keynes and also Cardiff City's first ever victory over Wimbledon.

We may have only ever played them 4 times before but after three defeats and a draw in the previous fixtures the win was welcome for City and for my kids who immediately felt a lot better.

The weather was shocking in the first half, driving wind and rain meant that there was no escape from the cold and wet. It stopped raining in the second half but by then the kids had lost all feeling in their fingers and toes.

It was a surreal experience. I though Wimbledon had made a very good fist of a bad job. They had a perfectly manicured pitch and a decent main stand with a roof. Those in there were the lucky ones. The other three sides were all uncovered with the ends behind the goal golf style "gallery" style temporary seating (though I must say they were very high quality and we had a perfect view of the game). The stand opposite the main stand was a strange structure. It was only one third of the pitch in length and situated on the half way line meaning there were huge gaps on either side of it.

On the pitch Cardiff answered the kit debate by wearing the Holland style orange shirts with white shorts and orange socks. Neil Alexander must have cringed when he saw them after Scotland were slaughtered by the Dutch in midweek.

The game was played at a fair pace in difficult conditions. Both sides gave away possession far too often and despite quick counter-attacking football there was not a glut of chances on goal.

City's goal came from a Gary Croft cross that Earnie just failed to get a touch to. Earnie's attempt did enough to deceive Banks (not Gordon) in the Wimbledon goal and the ball settled in the far corner of the net.

I felty extremely comfortable at half time but I was unnerved as Wimbledon pushed more in the second half. They are going to struggle this season as they failed to capitalise on their chances. One effort was knee'd over the bar when the goal was gaping.

Credit to both keepers who produced a superb save each. Alexander first, he dived to his left to push away a fierce shot while Banks tipped away a fantastic Langley free kick.

City went close from Langley's header but it was an uneasy final few minutes as the assistant said 3 mins added time. They were up when City won possession and broke down their right. Howard Webb looked at both his watches and placed the whistle in his mouth. Game over relief but no, not quite, City lost possession and Webb allowed Wimbledon to break and win a free kick 10 yards outside the City box. Fear took over, would we see a piledriver into the top corner? a cheeky chip? What came was a Wimbledon quick kick down the line which was crossed but intercepted and put out for a corner. Thankfully Webb decided that after 4 mins of added time there was no time for the corner and the points were bagged.

I then found out I'd lost my brolly. The Wimbledon folk who took it from me and gave me a left luggage ticket had all disappeared after the game and I was without my rain protection. In my hairless condition it's not so much of a problem. Drying my head is not an issue at all. One wipe with a tissue sorted that.

Into the car for the heaters on MAX and the kids thawing out around Oxford.

Look at the table. It says we are 8th, but we are only 6 points off the top. I'm starting to get very excited thoughts.
