Dave Jones: Cameron was naive

Last updated : 10 March 2006 By Michael Morris

"I don't agree with some of the things he said and there are some things I do agree with, but at the end of the day, he's 19 years of age, he's done an article, he's been misinterpreted in some of the things he's said and that's the boy's lack of experience with the press and it's part of his game he's got to work on."

Dave Jones was speaking about Cameron Jerome's article in the League paper last weekend.

Jerome was quoted as saying he may have to rethink his Cardiff City career if the Bluebirds are not promoted this summer. Dave Jones does not think he's ready yet for the Premiership

"If Cameron went to the Premiership now, I honestly believe he'd be back in the Championship being told to learn his trade.

"He might earn a bit more money and everything else, but he's back where he started and he's still got to go out there and learn his trade.

"Of course, if you go and play in the Premiership you would expect to play with better players because they are in a better league and that's what we're trying to do here.

"So if we get in the Premiership, does that mean that everything's OK?

Jones questioned some of Cameron's comments and highlighted his inexperience in dealing with the media. He also reminded the player he now has to face the fans after what was said.

"When he says he's got to have a rethink, what's he rethinking about?" Jones said.

"He's under contract, so same as what happened before the window; if someone's going to come and get him they're going to have to pay the money.

"If they think he's that good they are going to come and pay the money.

"He's been naive, whatever he said, what do you want me to do? He's scoring goals, he's in the team, yes, it's not a hidden fact that we do want better facilities, that's nothing new.

"Everybody wants to play in the Premiership, including me, I want to be in the Premiership, everybody we've got here should want to be in the Premiership, there's nothing in that.

"And I don't think Cameron's got the experience to realise whether he's getting better coaching or not.

"To go and play in the Premiership you've got to be a good player. Is he talking about going into the Premiership and getting better coaching from people who have been there? Because I've been there, Terry (Burton, assistant Cardiff manager) has coached at Arsenal, where else do you want to go?

"Do you want to play with better players? I'm sure the players here will be happy with that. We're all aspiring to be better, but you have to earn that right.

"As I said, maybe it's a little bit of naivety on Cameron's part, maybe he's been asked certain questions that he's not answered in the right way.

"It doesn't help and he's still got to go out there and prove things to the fans at Cardiff."
