Dowd the 'dodo'. It's not an insult. Honest!

Cardiff's Dave Jones has had to contend with one of the more ludicrous cases ever brought against a football manager yesterday, after being charged with bringing the game into disrepute for saying a referee had performed like 'a dodo'.

The FA of Wales, whom one would have hoped had more important issues to concern themselves, called in Jones to face their disciplinary committee in Cardiff over his post-match comments about referee Phil Dowd after the Championship game against Barnsley.

Football Factors, the specialist soccer detective firm defending Liverpool-born Jones, took the innovative route of contacting an expert phraseologist in Scouse speech based at Liverpool University who provided evidence that dodo — an extinct flightless bird originating in Mauritius — was also a non-insulting Scouse term of endearment.

Both sides agreed the dodo case was as dead as the bird before it was heard, but Jones was still fined £500 on a second charge of using offensive language towards a referee.
