"I'd had a niggly knee for a couple of weeks and it ached a bit - nothing more," he said.
"Then, after training, I was walking off and the knee locked. I couldn't bend it at all.
"Sean Connelly, our physio, had a look and I went for a scan.
"They found bits of cartilage floating around and I thought it would be cleaned up and I would be playing again in two or three weeks.
"Then the surgeons discovered cartilage was flaking off the bone and more had to be done.
"For three weeks I wasn't able to put any weight on the leg.
"I am due another scan now and hopefully that will show everything is fine now.
"It's my first surgery ever. I've been kind of lucky in that sense.
"I'm keen to be back and challenging as soon as possible. We are in a good position and if we get on another run then we will certainly threaten the top two places.
"We have Swansea next and that's a big game. But it might as well be Swansea every week, we simply have to go in to every game fully prepared and with our attitude spot-on."
New loan signing Stuart Taylor will continue in goal against Swansea and he is available to City for three matches after that before his loan spell ends. Enckelman should then be fit to take over for the last couple of games.
It's been a difficult time for Dimi Konstantopoulos. A couple of glaring errors cost City points and saw him dropped for Taylor.
Enckelman knows how he feels.
"That's goalkeepers for you," he said. "We've all been there. Certainly I know exactly how he felt.
"Everybody makes mistakes and Dimi is strong enough to deal with it. He just has to get his head down and work hard."
