Every player will have to fight for his place

City have a full squad available for todays game at Merthyr but only 22 players will travel to Scotland. Lennie says he cannot take everyone to Scotland but those who don't go are not out of the reckoning, every player will get a chance.

At Merthyr today Lennie will play two different teams

"Every player is going to get 45 minutes against Merthyr. I will play a different 11 for each half. I've got two players for every position, which is what I always wanted. I want to be fair to every player at this club." Lawrence told the Western Mail.

The only clue Lennie has given to his strating line up for Oldham is that Graham Kavanagh will be in the team.

"The players who finished last season have obviously got a strong claim to start against Oldham. For example, take Graham Kavanagh. After the season he had it would take something drastic to happen for him not to play.

"But once the season starts he's got to perform to keep his place just like everybody else. No one is guaranteed their shirt here.

"My players have only got to look around the dressing room to realise how intense the competition is going to be.

"The only thing that is certain is this - if a player doesn't train right or live right then he won't be in my team.

"The door is open to everybody. There are players who, for one reason or another, didn't contribute much last season and it's going to be harder for them. But if they work their way into my plans then great."

As Lennie says the team that ended last season is likely to be largely unchanged, Gareth Whalley could be challenging Mark Bonner or Willie Boland for a place while Chris Barker will be challenging Andy Legg for the left back role. Spencer Prior will miss the game through suspension. It's unknown what formation Lennie will choose but it looks like he will go for a 4 - 3 - 3 with the impressive front line of Earnshaw, Thorne and Campbell. Thats guesswork for the moment, Lennie has 6 pre season games to fine tune his ideas.
