FA Cup countdown. Margate watch.

Last updated : 01 December 2002 By Michael Morris
Chris Kinnear, brother of Joe Kinnear, took his Margate side to Yeovil yesterday and lost the game 2 - 1. Last week ahead of their FA Cup replay with Orient, Margate were beaten 5 - 0 at Chester.

Don't read anything into these results though. The FA Cup throws the form guides out of the window. Margate and Cardiff, both classed as smaller teams, are aiming for the big draw in round 3. I don't buy any of the claims of fans who think the cup is a distraction so are not bothered by it. I have been brought up on the FA Cup third round draw, I've missed lessons from school when it used to be held on a Monday. Last year we were rewarded with Leeds Utd and Ninian Park, the first time for years we'd had a decent draw.

While in hindsight the Leeds win prolonged Alan Corks career at City and could be seen to have cost us promotion, a very debatable point, it has been written down in City history. Try telling the 22,000 fans at Ninian Park on Jan 6th, 2002 at around 10 to 6 as Scott Young scored the winner, that it meant nothing.

This year if we can overcome Conference side Margate, who play at Crabble - home of Dover Athletic, I think I'd like a day out at Old Trafford or Anfield. Maybe even Highbury for a 1927 revisited occasion. I was at Highbury yesterday for Arsenal v Aston Villa (the second part of my weekend of football after Loftus Rd), and I tell you, if we drew Arsenal in North London we'd create a superb atmosphere. I'm sure v Spurs and Man Utd the ground is fairly hostile but v Villa it was no whewre near as passionate as Loftus Rd was the night before.

City have 825 tickets for next Saturdays 1pm kick off. A bleary eyed 7.30am start from Cardiff awaits (thats for me in the car, I guess the buses will leave a touch earlier).
