Notts County had scored their opening goal when Hammam and the fan had a heated exchange. Stewards then stepped in and the supporter was escorted from the ground. It's also said that another irate supporter was refrained by stewards when he got to within 6 feet of Lennie Lawrence.

Speaking to the Echo afterwards Sam said

"The man is always shouting at the team, I know him. If we were 3-0 up he'd be shouting that we should be four up. Stay at home if you're not going to get behind the team. I don't want them at the ground - they are doing more harm than good".

Hammam then talked with disappointed fans in the Ninian Park bars after the game.
