Fans and police clash at Wolves

What started as light hearted chanting because Wolves had been told not to sell alcohol at half time turn into a nasty confrontation.

Police and stewards came into the area to stop the fans from chanting and bashing the shutters but it got out of control as scores of riot police waded into the enclosed area with batons and shields.

The elderly, women and children were knocked aside and the situation went out of control with the scene extending to the seating area.

As a result the game was delayed.

Arrests have been made and complaints are being lodged. Supporters left the area with bandages on from head wounds while police officers also suffered injuries.

Speaking after the incidents Sam Hammam said

"Of course it is not good to see police going into a crowd and getting involved in such incidents, but I don't want to say any more until I have heard all the facts and found out whether anybody has misbehaved," he said.

"People are going to be critical because the police are involved, but it is important people do not make sweeping statements about Cardiff fans. They have been criticised in the past, but are now accepted among the very best in the Championship - in the whole country."

I don't want to make too many observations as the matter will end up going to court but in my opinion there are some City fans who need to look at themselves and how they behave but more alarming in my opinion was the way West Midlands police chose to deal with the situation. Why they despatched waves of riot police into an enclosed area with many women and children present is a mystery. It was an over the top reation and one that could have ened with more serious consequences than the injuries that occured.
