Gabbidon hoping for place on the bench

Daniel Gabbidon is hoping to be part of the 16 on duty at Bramall Lane as City face Sheffield Utd this Saturday (3:00pm). Gabbidon has been out since hurting his foot at Nottingham Forest nearly a month ago. It's been a costly injury, Gabbidon has missed 4 City games so far and 2 Wales games.

In the City team his place has been taken by Welsh U21 international James Collins. With 4 very competent displays James Collins has done nothing to deserve to be dropped, something thats been commented on by Gabbidon

"James have been given his chance and he has taken it. I know the manager is really pleased with what he has done for the team," Gabbidon told the Western Mail

"In my absence he has done everything right and nothing wrong so I don't expect to waltz straight back into the side."

Gabbidon also believes Collins can make a mark for Wales.

"I'm really proud of James for the way he has been playing for us.

"Maybe the fans didn't know how good he was but the players at the club knew what he could do. James has been given a good run in the side and he has been absolutely brilliant for us.

"If he keeps playing as well as he has been doing for Cardiff, then surely it's only a matter of time before Mark Hughes calls him up into the senior squad."

Collins and Tony Vidmar will again be the centre back pairing on Saturday although Gabbidon will soon start to push for his place back. He is due to resume full training today and hopes to be part of the squad on Saturday.

"My heel is a lot better now, although there is still a little bit of soreness there. However, it is getting better.

"I'm hoping I'll be OK to make it on the bench against Sheffield United. Don't forget, I have not trained or played for a couple of weeks - and James has been playing superbly.

"If I do come through training, I can't expect to walk straight back into the team."

Well done to James Collins. To come in and do a job is one achievement to then to do well enough to keep Daniel Gabbidon out of the side is another.
