Grandstand comes crashing down

A gap in the sky
Once the klaxon sounded to warn of the collapse just a couple of seconds passed and the roof structure was hauled onto what was the playing surface. Then silence and a big gap in the sky where the stand had been.

The demolition had been due to take place at 12 noon but some more metalwork needed cutting so when I went to have a look at around 2.30pm the roof was still in place.

I didn't have time to get out of my car before I head a low rumbling noise followed by a huge crash as the top half of the Grandstand disappeared from my view. Quite numbing, like watching a car crash in slow motion when you can do nothing about it, and then seconds later it was gone.

Redrow Homes announced yesterday they hope to have people moving into the houses that will be built on the site by April.
