Have we scored 5 in the League Cup before?

You're wondering. Have Cardiff City ever scored five in a League Cup match before? The answer is that they have, three times before to be exact.

* In the second round of the 1962-63 competition City beat Reading 5-1 at Ninian Park. Bristol Rovers knocked the Bluebirds out of the League Cup in the third round, topping City 2-0 on their home turf.

* City beat Reading again in the fourth round during the 1965-66 season and by the same score and again at Ninian Park. The win moved the Bluebirds into the quarterfinals where they beat Ipswich Town 2-1 in Cardiff. City proceeded to the semifinals for the only time in club history but lost 10-3 on aggregate to West Ham, dropping the away match 5-2 and then falling at Ninian Park 5-1. West Ham finished 12th in Division One that year but lost in the League Cup finals to West Bromwich 5-3 on aggregate.

* In the first leg of the first round tie with Plymouth in 1986-87 City topped Argyle 5-4, also at Ninian Park. City won the away leg 1-0 to prevail 6-4 on aggregate and go to the second round. Luton were to provide the opposition but were disqualified for refusing to admit away fans (how sublime!) and City were on to the third round, where they advanced again, topping Chelsea 2-1 in Cardiff. In the fourth round, however, Shrewsbury clipped the Bluebirds 1-0 at Gay Meadow.

The five scored at Boston United yesterday does set a record, though, for most away goals in a League Cup tilt. The old mark was four, a feat the Bluebirds have pulled off twice.

* In their very first League Cup match, in the first round in 1960-61, City won at Middlesbrough 4-3. City lost at home to Burnley 4-0 in the second round.

* In the second leg of a first round tie with Bristol Rovers in 1976-77 City drew 4-4 away from home, giving the Bluebirds a 6-5 aggregate win. QPR beat City 3-1 at Ninian Park in the second round, however.

Wednesday night's win puts City in the second round. Heady stuff, of course, for the Bluebirds as they've got this far in the competition for only the third time in the last 12 tries. The Bluebirds haven't got beyond the second round since that run in 1986-87.
