Brighton boss Sami Hyypia felt his side produced their best display of the season despite being held to a 1-1 home draw against Cardiff.

Spanish defender Bruno Saltor volleyed the Seagulls ahead in the 20th minute, but a mistake between Seagulls keeper David Stockdale and Lewis Dunk allowed Kenwyne Jones to level just a minute later from the edge of the area.

Goalkeeper David Marshall produced a string of outstanding saves to deny Hyypia's men a first league win in six games, but Hyypia was determined to concentrate on the positives.

The Finn said: "This was our best performance of the season and that is why it is so frustrating.

"The players did a very good job and that is why I'm pleased. I do have a lot of faith in the team and the system; we've worked for three months at it."

Hyypia refused to criticise keeper Stockdale for his indecision that led to Cardiff's equaliser, and said: "Maybe he could have done better with the goal, but he did well in the second half.

"My idea is that I don't point the finger, the most important thing is how you react. We all make mistakes.

"I think the whole 90 minutes was good, Cardiff had the ball at times but didn't create dangerous things. I thought we started well and finished well and that is what you need every time."

Cardiff joint caretaker manager Scott Young was delighted his men made it three league games unbeaten since he and Danny Gabbidon took charge following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He said: "We wanted to make us hard to beat when setting out and we certainly are now."

Prospective new boss Russell Slade was again in the crowd of 23,712, but Young said that he and Gabbidon had enjoyed "every minute" of their time at the helm and were ready to continue for Friday's trip to Blackpool, if necessary.

He added: "This is what Danny and I wanted to do, and we are proud of what we have done."

Young described Cardiff's hard-earned point as "decent" and heaped praise on the performance of Marshall, who he believes is one of the best keepers in the country.

"We see David do this day in, day out in training," he said. "He is unbelievable at this level and would be among the top five or six in the top flight.

"It's been a tough week but I'm really pleased with the effort we've put in. We've taken five points out of nine so far and the lads' reaction has been first-class. They have shown great togetherness and desire."
