Jones: Lets have a right go at Colchester

Last updated : 08 December 2007 By Michael Morris
Cardiff City are in a right old state on and off the pitch and is in danger of imploding in on itself completly.

Dave Jones met the press ahead of the home match with Colchester and talked, and talked and talked.

"The football club is killing itself from within" he said of the current situation.

"The whole place is on a downer and that has to change.

"There is so much going on, so much being said about Cardiff City and written about Cardiff City.

"None of it is positive and it's time we did something about that.

"There are plenty of good things happening as well, but they are not mentioned.

"We have to start the process on the pitch.

"I know that and my players know that. But let's do it together.

"Let's talk our club up, get behind the team and see what the response is.

"I'm asked all the time whether what is happening off the pitch involving the court case affects the players.

"Maybe it does. We try to protect them, but it's natural to want to know what is going on.

"And now there is a fear factor at Ninian Park.

"You could sense that against Charlton.

"There is a small section of the crowd - and it is only a small section because the vast majority are excellent - who start getting at the players in the early stages.

"That happened on Tuesday.

"Tomorrow, against Colchester, let's all back the players.

"Change isn't the answer. The way this club is right now it would be a short-term fix.

"Everybody seems to think instant change is the answer and it's not.

"I ask fans to back their players and not have a go at them.

"They will do everything possible to respond - it's the lift they need.

"The players want to do well for Cardiff City - and let's give them that chance.

"We should make Ninian Park a hellhole for visiting teams.

"Right now it's a hellhole alright, but for the wrong reasons.

"Let's turn that around.

"During the 90 minutes cheer the players, back them as loud as you like.

"If the players don't perform - and I accept we failed to perform against Charlton - then let the players and I know after the final whistle. That's fine and we will accept that.

"But for 90 minutes against Colchester let's all pull together and have a right go.

"I did not expect a performance like that against Charlton. We let ourselves down.

"Yesterday, we watched the tape of the match.

"When we had possession we were poor, but we restricted Charlton to two shots on target.

"The second was from a penalty - and both went in.

"The performance was so disappointing after our 2-2 draw at Hull City.

"When we played pretty well in the previous three matches the players were praised for that. Rightly so.

"When things go wrong it's my fault.

"Stephen McPhail should have put his head on the ball to clear instead of trying to do that with his thigh.

"He would probably have got a free-kick.

"Instead it ran to their player and he scored from the shot.

"That's the way it has been going for us.

"Peter Whittingham is probably one of the most technically gifted players ever at this club," he continued.

"But his body language doesn't show that. That's just him, but it's something we have talked about and he must work on.

"Paul Parry produces some good runs and gets into good positions, but there is too often no end product.

"He scored a great goal against Ipswich Town.

"We need to see more from his deliveries into the penalty area."
