"We are going through a bad patch and are just about hanging in there," he said.

"We are in a dip but must keep battling away until January when hopefully I can bring in some help.

"We had a couple of decent chances today but we just can't put the ball away and things aren't coming off for us. Maybe the players are feeling a little sorry for themselves."

And on the boos from a minority of supporters.

"I have never understood that kind of reaction, it baffles me," said Jones.

"There is no point in the fans having a go. What about the other 7,000 who are missing? We need them. If we were third from bottom I could understand it but we are third from top. The ones that booed obviously feel they were entitled to do it but it is not exactly going to help us, is it."

"Defensively we were excellent and our 'keeper was not bothered too much," said delighted Colchester manager Geraint Williams.

"The last 20 minutes we were well on top and are a little disappointed not to have taken all three points.

"Cardiff are a good side and will be in there at the end of the season as Dave Jones is doing a good job but we are very happy with our return of points to date."
