Last Saturday's defeat in a historical context

C:WindowsTempphp50FD.tmpbut I suspect most of us envisaged such defeats would be inflicted by the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City or Tottenham as opposed to Hull City - a club that was in the bottom division of the Football League on the last occasion that the Bluebirds were defeated 0-4 at home.

Cambridge United were the last side to beat Cardiff by that scoreline in South Wales. That was back in April 2000, but you have to go as far back as April 1994 to find a heavier home defeat. Cambridge United were again the visitors and recorded a bizarre 7-2 victory which had to be seen to be believed.

Cardiff City have in fact conceded four or more goals in a home league game on just ten occasions during the last 25 years. Those games, which all ended in defeat, were as follows:

17/03/1990: 1-5 v Huddersfield Town
01/01/1992: 0-5 v Maidstone United
11/09/1993: 3-4 v Hull City
30/04/1994: 2-7 v Cambridge United
28/03/1995: 2-4 v Bradford City
12/03/1996: 1-4 v Fulham
03/01/2000: 0-4 v Preston North End
15/04/2000: 0-4 v Cambridge United
08/04/2006: 2-5 v Reading
22/02/2014: 0-4 v Hull City

Cardiff's heaviest home defeat during their last season in the top flight prior to the current campaign (the 1961/62 season) was also 0-4, that time against Leicester City (07/04/1962).

The Bluebirds have five home games remaining this season and those include clashes with title contenders Liverpool and Chelsea. Cardiff have tended to raise their game when facing the division's leading lights, so I reckon another heavy home defeat is unlikely.
