Lawrence says Gabbidon stays

Daniel Gabbidon returned from Finland with praise ringing in his ears from management and players alike after helping to keep a clean sheet for Wales. Excellent for the player but a worry to City fans that Premiership managers will be alerted to his talents. Lennie Lawrence this week told the Western Mail

"Gabbidon is not for sale as far as I'm concerned and I'm sure Sam Hammam will tell you the same thing."

"Danny has come a long way in a short space of time and he will be a part of Cardiff City's future for many years to come.

"No club has contacted me about Danny and no one has contacted Sam either. If they had called Sam I'm sure he would have told me.

"Maybe Danny will attract interest from Premiership clubs - but we're not going to be bombarded with inquiries until January which is good news.

"He's 23 now and it's not impossible that he will be in the Premiership with Cardiff by the time he's 25 or 26.

"If I said this and we were at another Second Division club then people would say that's not really possible. But at Cardiff it is possible. It's a long, hard journey - but it can happen."

Lawrence reflects on his previous role as manager of Charlton when he lost a young Robert Lee

"I admit I do cringe when I hear people like Ryan Giggs and Robbie Savage praising Danny. That's not a criticism because players do talk about other players.

"I've experienced it before, when I was manager at Charlton. We had a young Robert Lee there and his teammates were saying he was going to play for England which I rather they hadn't done!

"But I don't worry about all this talk getting to Danny because he seems unflappable. He's not one for getting carried away. I'd worry more if it was happening to other players.

"The way Wales play - inviting pressure and then playing on the counterattack - suits him. When you're under the cosh he's different class.

"It's when his team-mates are attacking and the ball is 70 yards away that he needs to improve. He's got to concentrate when the ball is far away from him.

"But I'm pleased for the boy. It's an interesting time for Cardiff and it's an interesting time for Wales - and Danny is at the centre of both."
