That had many City fans reaching for the valium but it was not exactly as straight forward as that.

Earnie still has over 2 years to run on his current contract. Lennie is in the process of prepring a new deal to extend it by another year.

When asked about the story that Earnie is refusing to sign a new deal Lennie told the Western Mail

"Not true, I'm due to meet his agent in the not-too-distant future and I'm not anticipating that to be the case.

"If it was the case, we live with it. He's got a long time to go and I'll tell you when it happens.

"We haven't extended Earnie's contract yet, but we haven't dismissed the possibility of extending it.

"As I say, I'm meeting the agent soon and we will deal with things as and when."

"As a club we wish to retain our assets for as long as possible. But, by the same token, if a player is doing his stuff for us and has made a significant contribution to our success then they are rewarded.

"I think he deserves a new contract but you don't just get more money - you've got to extend it. That's how it works."

So far Graham Kavanagh, James Collins and Willie Boland have already extended their current contracts.

Should Earnshaw sign for a longer term it is said he will move into the £10,000 a week bracket.
