Lennie gave Doherty his break in league football when he was at Luton aged 17. He then sold the versatile player to Spurs for £1m.

Doherty is still rated a £1m player, he has suffered from injury and is considering an initial loan move to Cardiff with a permanent signing not ruled out.

Lawrence confirmed to the Echo

"We are interested in bring Gary Doherty to Cardiff City. It would have to be a loan deal to start with."

Doherty it's said can play in defence or attack but its the defensive qualities that interest Lennie "I see him mainly as a centre half" said Lawrence.

Lennie also confirmed he is still talking with Bjorn Riise, the younger brother of Liverpool's Jan Arne Riise. Riise is a right sided midfield player who is also interesting Man City. He had talks with Man City yesterday but has been invited to Ninian Park to watch tomorrows game against Bristol City.

Talks with Michael Hughes have ended because of an ankle problem with the midfielder.

With Daniel Gabbidon still absent and Scott Young and David Hughes out injured as well then cover is required in central defence and signing a Premiership player is no bad thing.
