Luton v Cardiff. Match preview

Last updated : 14 February 2006 By Michael Morris
Dave Jones takes his City squad to Luton today hoping to stay right on the heels of the play off places. City are currently 5 points behind 6th place but remain the nearest contender.

Luton still harbour play off hopes but they are 4 points behind City and surely defeat for the home side tonight would leave them too big a mountain to climb as they would remain at least nine points behind 6th place, possibly more depending on the results of Preston tonight and Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

City know that if they want to remain play off challangers they have to win matches. The 5 point gap is not helped by the two catchable teams also having games in hand. If ever City needed a good week with others doing us a favour it's this week.

So far so good, City's win over Stoke was boosted when Palace dropped points at Sheff Weds. Now if Q.P.R. could do us a favour tonight and halt Preston's progress we could have another good night, that is of course if we win.

Luton will be desperate to put right Saturday's nightmare trip to Preston. They lost the game 5 - 1. Had their keeper sent off and had boss Mike Newell sent to the stand.

They have appealled the red card issued against Marlon Beresford. At the time of writing it's unknown if they have been successful. If they are he can play tonight.

Luton don't draw many games. In the last 19 played they have drawn only once. They appear a bit erratic. Losing the last two, winning the two before that and the four games before that were all lost. City in the same period have won 4 and lost 3 of their last 8 games.

On the pitch Dave Jones has to decide whether he brings in Jason Koumas. City's talented midfielder is back after a one match ban. Once it's decided if he's in then who gets dropped? Will Koumas play in a more orthodox 4 - 4 - 2 or will he play behind Cameron in a 4 - 4 - 1 - 1.

All Dave Jones would say on Koumas' return was

"It gives me another player for the squad, I've now got 18 players who can travel. It gives me another player and an important one because of the size of the squad. I've said all along we're not a one-man team, but people don't believe you as, because of Jason's quality, they get carried away.

"But to give him opportunities, to give him the time on the ball, other players have to do their own jobs and sometimes Jason's responsibilities as well. But that's the make-up of the team."

Steve Thompson and Glenn Loovens are still both out but Thompson may be in contention for a place on Saturday.

As mentioned above Luton are waiting to hear if Marlon Beresford can play but they will be without Chris Coyne and David Bell, who both have knee injuries.
