"We first went in for him (Thompson) in the summer when Rangers wanted £1million but we stuck at it and I'm very glad to have done the deal for far less than the original asking figure.

"In the first half he found it very difficult as he was closely marked by a defender and also screened by one of the midfield players - but he put away both goals in great style.

"It was important that all three new signings took part today and Ricky Scimeca showed what he can do when he came on for Darren Purse with 10 minutes to go."

Steve Cotterill

"We had a crazy madcap five minutes but we were not helped by some of the referee's decisions.

"We should have been awarded a free-kick before they scored the opener and up until then I thought we were comfortable and it was looking like a 0-0 draw.

"To be fair to us and Cardiff, we have both done well to get where we are but Cardiff are in a better position financially as showed by the new players they had out today."
