McCarthy's view on Jeff Whitley

Jeff Whitley was Mick McCarthy's first signing at Sunderland and the midfielder played over 70 league and cup games for the Black Cats in the last two seasons. 26 year old Whitley started out at Man City before loan spells at Wrexham and Notts County. His Championship career was revived when McCarthy signed him from Man City in August 2003.

McCarthy said of the player last month

"Jeff Whitley has been a fantastic player for me. He's been terrific and he's been much-maligned at times. I just think it's time for a change, to move on and have someone new in the Premiership. But in this league he has been brilliant for me and I've said it to him.

"He's a terrific character and if someone in the Championship is looking for a player who drives people on, wins tackles and who is a great character, they will do well to sign him."

Nice words let's hope the tenacious midfielder can do the business for Cardiff after agreeing a 2 year deal.
