Newport v Cardiff. Preview

Last updated : 26 January 2004 By Michael Morris
Cardiff City enter the FAW Premier Cup tonight looking to avoid another defeat to Newport County. Last season the teams were drawn together in the semi finals, also at Newport, and it was the Exiles who won on penalties. (report here).

Reserve boss Paul Wilkinson will be in charge of the team tonight. No players due to be involved in Saturdays league game against Nottingham Forest will play tonight. City will include youth players along with the likes of James Collins, Jason Bowen and Gavin Gordon.

The winners of tonights game (it will be settled on the night) will progress into the semi finals.

There is no live TV coverage of the game but highlights will be shown on the BBC tomorrow evening when they are showing the TNS v Wrexham game live.

Lennie Lawrence will be expecting more from his squad than last year.

"We'll be looking for a better performance than last year - that was a disgrace," Lawrence told BBC Sport.

"Credit to Newport, they did very well on the night. The squad will be largely the same but the key element is the young players are a year older.

"Two or three senior players will play, but not any more than that and certainly no-one who will be involved on Saturday against Nottm Forest will play.

"So we'll just get on with it. I'm not expecting to lose to Newport. I was mighty unhappy we lost last year and I'll be mighty unhappy if we lose this year."

Newport have only won three league games at home this season and will include former City Jeff Eckhardt in their line up.
