Norwich promoted as Sunderland are slain at the Palace

Last updated : 21 April 2004 By Michael Morris
Sunderlands automatic promotion hopes hit a fatal snag tonight when they lost 3 - 0 at Crystal Palace. The Black Cats can still catch second placed WBA but only mathematically. Albion would have to lose their 4 remaining games and Sunderland win their 4 games. Also a goal difference of -11 as far as Sunderland is concerned means they are looking at the play offs with WBA needing just 1 more point.

That means that Norwich are promoted. Congratulations to Delia and her chefs.

Palace's win puts them level with West Ham on 67 points. West Ham are 6th, Palace are 7th.

Who would have thought that just 11 days ago we were above Palace with a home game against them. Since then they have picked up 10 points compared to our 3.

To be honest to be talking about City in such circles is a fair achievement and to think that we go into MatchDay 44 of 46 still with a mathmatical chance of a play off place means we've done bloody well this season.

Only three wins will do for City, and even then we'd need to see a set of results that would make a far eastern gambling syndicate blush, so it's Division 1 again next season.

League table after matches on April 21st.
