Penalty win for County in FAW Premier Cup

A Bluebirds line up with 8 players with league experience were held by a Newport side that included 5 former Bluebirds, 4 of which, Damon Searle, Jason Perry, Steve Jenkins and Lee Jarman have a combined number of Cardiff City appearances significantly more than the Cardiff City team they were facing.

After 90 mins it was 0 - 0 and it remained that way until the final 6 or 7 mins of extra time when Jason Bowen headed Newport in front. Their joy lasted a couple of minutes when Steve Thompson scored after good work by Glenn Loovens.

The game went to penalties with both sides scoring their opening 4 kicks. County then missed leaving Steve Thompson to take the match winning kick but he scuffed the ball wide of the post. Newport then scored to take a 5 - 4 lead and young Jack Carlile saw his spot kick saved to give Newport the victory.

A healthy following of around 900 or so from Newport made up about half of the total crowd. They went home happy.

Riccy Scimeca played 45 mins. Trevor Sinclair the whole game. Glenn Loovens was my pick of the City players from what I saw of the game.
