Purse issues rally cry

City skipper Darren Purse spoke out yesterday about the poor attendances at Ninian Park this season. Cardiff have had three sub 10,000 league crowds so far this season in nine games.

Sam Hammam was banking on a 13,000 break even figure. City rose to 5th thanks to the away win at Sheff Weds and if they acheive a result at Preston then it will be disappointing not to get a bumper crowd against Brighton on Tuesday. Apart from a brief spell in the top three after two games last season City have now risen to 5th in the table, their highest place for 22 years.

"If this club has any aspirations of getting promoted this season or next season then we have to get more fans at our home games, it's as simple as that," said Purse.

"A few weeks back we were playing at home and the gate was around 9,000. For the capital team in Wales that's a bit of an embarrassment. It was the second-lowest gate in the division. I think only Brighton had a smaller crowd.

"If the fans care and worry about this club, then they will come out and do their bit. The players and management are doing theirs."

"To be in a play-off position and get crowds of 9,000 is an embarrassment. Our crowds are a big disappointment.

"If you play in front of 9,000 or 10,000 people, you're not going to move up this league.

"When I first came to the club I thought we would get crowds of 15,000-16,000 at our home games. We've proved we can get crowds that size - we had more than 15,000 for our first home game of the season against Leeds."
