Record breaker. Earnie gets his 31st. Website reaction.

At last, after 7 hours of waiting City scored and what a goal. It was nothing special as far as the execution was concerned, it was not a 30 yard screamer, it was not a volley or an overhead kick. What it was though was Robert Earnshaw's record breaking 31st goal of the season. Cooly finished, Earnie eased the ball past Ince in the Crewe goal and at last, after 5 games City fans had something to celebrate.

The game was largely irrelevant, the only thing riding on the outcome was the play off oponents. As it turns out it will be Bristol City over two legs. The first at Ninian Park next weekend.

The first half was poor fayre, nothing much to report in footballing terms, a cabbage patch of a pitch making flowing football hard but not impossible. Both teams stuck to a passing game and overall cancelled each other out, Crewe headed in a corner for a first half lead, in the second half Alexandr made one save. Campbell blew City's best chance when he fired wide when through on goal, soon after Earnie created history. A ball from the City right found its way to the City striker and he made no mistake.

Earnie was a second half sub, he came on at half time with Graham Kavanah for Gavin Gordon and Willie Boland. Andy Legg came on for Andy Campbell and you have to say City were far better with Earnie, Kav and Legg in the team.

Gareth Whalley started a game for the first time since his injury, he was neat and tidy and Mark Bonner worked hard.

It was Robert Earnshaws day and the little Welsh international becomes City's record league scorer with 31 goals in a domestc season, Stan Richards all those years ago scored 30. In total it's 35 for Earnie, league and cup and you can throw in a goal for Wales as well.

Crewe were always going to celebrate the day, they are up, we are not, yet, but it surprised me that several thousand of their fans left at the final whistle and did not stay to see their team celebrate promotion. City fans were excellent throughout and supported their team all game and Earnie's goal was fair reward.

So it's the play off semi finals, Bristol City the oponents, the second leg at Ashton gate could be the best night of out lives, or it could be the worst. The season starts now.
