Robbo escapes driving ban

A FORMER Wales footballer yesterday admitted driving at more than 100mph because he was speeding home to see his sick mother.

A court heard Cardiff City midfielder John Robinson, 34, moved to live near Brighton to care for his mother Anne after his father died.

Cardiff manager Lennie Lawrence allowed Robinson to drive to a game against West Bromwich Albion in February, so he could visit his mother afterwards.

His Mercedes S500 was clocked at 101mph on the A449 between Kemeys and Coldra, near Newport.

Although he could have lost his licence, magistrates decided to fine him £800. He was the fourth person caught speeding to receive a fine instead of a driving ban at the court yesterday.
