Russell Slade speaks ahead of Brentford clash

Last updated : 14 March 2015 By Michael Morris

Russell Slade on injuries...

David Marshall is struggling a wee bit with his leg injury. What we are trying to avoid is any long-term injury developing, He remains a doubt for the Brentford match. A major doubt.

It’s all about his kicking leg and the possibility of aggravating the muscle at top of his leg. There is a bit of bruising.

That means there is a strong possibility Simon Moore will face his former club. He has been excellent every time he has been called on and performed with great credit

Aron Gunnarsson is fine and available.

There are one or two other niggles in the camp and we will know more later.

Slade on the Charlton match...

It was decent in terms of keeping a little more controlled possession. We had 18 shots, but there were a lot from distance and we didn’t create enough inside the penalty area.

There were also two defensive lapses which has been unusual for us. Over last few games we have been tight and resilient.

We should have taken something out of game, we know that. It hurt to lose.

Slade on Brentford and their threats...

They probably play with even more freedom at home than away. They are in a situation where if they are to get into the play-offs they have to win matches. It could be an extremely open game.

They have scored plenty of goals lately and have threats from a number of areas. Alex Pritchard in midfield is a quality player, while Andre Gray up front has real pace.

Jon Douglas, too, is still getting forward at his age and is a big part of what they do going forward.

Brentford will come at us and we have to be compact, narrow and solid. There is also a need to carry a threat going forward.

Slade on away form...

Our away form was poor and is and only improving now.

The pity is that those two wins have not been backed up with a victory at home, That’s where the disappointment is.

Slade on long-term injuries...

Joe Mason and Kagisho Dikgacoi have both been training, while Anthony Pilkington is running. He hasn’t, though, started training with the main group.

Dikgacoi has been out with us for the last couple of days while Mason joined in at the end of last week and has continued that this week. We will be looking to get Mason some kind of game over the next seven days.

Dikgacoi is probably a little further away and won’t be playing any competitive football for a couple of weeks.

I am looking forward to seeing those three players. Pilkington played three or four games after I came in, but the other two have not kicked a ball for me.

It’s good news to have players of that calibre coming in.

Maybe they could go out on loan, but we’ll have to see if it’s too late for that, Dikgacoi would be the one who would benefit if that was possible.

That would help give me a better picture.

Slade on Adam le Fondre's comments...

That was something I wouldn’t have made public, but the boy seems to have got a little confused.

I spoke to his representatives a long time before the Middlesbrough game. It was a week or two before.

They were looking to see if it was possible for Le Fondre to go out on loan. He was keen to go.

It was a phone call to me from his representatives talking about a possible loan.

Le Fondre is still part of our long term plans. The idea of him going out on loan was for him to play matches, get some football.

With strikers it’s a confidence thing. He needed to get a little form back.

Slade on the new badge...

It seems to have gone down well. On the poll I saw well over 70 per cent were happy with the badge.

It looks good and there will, of course, be a new shirt to go with it.

The return to blue has been a positive with fans and the badge is acceptable, but that means a lot of the negativity now seems to be towards you. What are your thoughts?

Whatever negativities there are you have to deal with as a manager, That’s part of a managers job.

You have to deal with the fact that not everybody will be happy. People are entitled to their opinion.

I think we are moving in the right direction and I believe players believe that as well.

In our last six fixtures we have won two, drawn two and lost two. That’s too inconsistent. We want to be more consistent.

Nothing more frustrating for a manager than inconsistency, but we are moving forward and getting there.

Slade on possible changes in the future...

There will still be a process of some players going out with one or two coming in for next season.

Over our last 10 fixtures we want to earn as many points as possible. I’d love to get Pilkington and Mason in there before the end of this season.

It would be great to get Dikgacoi in as well, but he has been out for such a long time.

Slade on a difficult run of matches...

It is tough when you play the calibre of clubs we are facing, they are two very difficult games for us.

Players are well aware that the next 10 games are important for a lot of reasons. There is more restructuring to come.

The next opportunity will be this summer. It’s important they all work hard if they want to be part of the process going forward.

I don’t have points targets in mind, but it would be nice if we could earn an average of two per match. That would be decent.

Slade on the players out on loan...

We are making sure we are getting more regular reports now than we were initially. Their form is being checked out.

We are starting to structure the system, which is getting better and stronger. We have employed one or two part-time scouts.

That is something we are addressing because we were a bit short geographically. We need foot soldiers to make sure those jobs are done and we check on our players all the time.
