Scott Young forced to quit playing

Back problems have forced Cardiff City's longest serving player, Scott Young, to quit playing.

Young, only 28, was awarded a testimonial at the start of this season against Charlton. He managed 10 mins of action in a cameo role and that was the last time he played with the first team. He has played a a couple of reserve team games in a bid to regain fitness but the injury has forced him out.

"I can't go on like this. Professional football is all I've ever known and it's hard to accept," Young told the Echo.

"But I have a young family and I have to get on with my life. You can't be too careful with back injuries."

Scott will go down in City folklore for his 89th minute winner against Leeds Utd at Ninian Park in 2002 (below). He was a regular goalscorer with his forrays into the penalty area for corners and free kicks.

Regarding the Leeds goal Scott said

"In a one off game situation, that would be the highlight of my career. But the promotions I've been involved with are up there as well."

cardiffcity.com wish Scott all the best for the future and thalnks for the effort put into Cardiff City.

Scott has been offered the chance to remain at the club with a schools / community coaching role. Good luck in your new challenge.

Young (centre) turns away after getting the winner.
