Scunthorpe working hard to remove snow

Last updated : 14 January 2010 By Michael Morris
With the worst of the snow over and temperatures set to rise the groundstaff are now clearing the snow off the surface under the guidance of groundsman Graham Colby.

"Saturday should be all-right," Colby told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"We shall start taking the snow off the pitch today because the forecast isn't too bad for this week.

"Any frost in the pitch we need to get out, so the snow needs to come off.

"Once we've taken the snow off, hopefully, by Saturday, any frost that's in the pitch will have come out.

"We also need to get the snow off to prevent waterlogging when it thaws.

"You want to get rid of as much water as you can, although with a sand-based pitch it drains quite well.

"We've got five of us helping to clear the snow off now.

"It's going to take us a long while, a couple of days at least to take it off the pitch, unless we get any help from the public.

"We usually get people willing to help and it's a godsend.

"It really is worthwhile and really helps us."
