Clubs that reach the Championship have three years to make their stadiums all seater or face have the terraced area's closed down.

With a new stadium in the pipeline for City, it makes no sense to upgrade Ninian Park to an all seater so an extention was successfully applied for.

Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Tessa Jowell has passed the application after being satisfied the clubs plans for a new stadium were on track.

"Cardiff City has demonstrated that it is actively looking to move from its present location and provided proof that its stadium development is progressing as planned," said a spokeswoman for Ms Jowell.

"The stadium project had the elements in place that would be expected by this stage and the decision was made to extend the use of terracing for a definite period of time.

"The club will need to reapply for a further extension to the use of standing areas at Ninian Park in 12 months time."
