Thompson welcomes competition upfront

Sunderland's Steve Elliott and Crewe's Luke Varney are names that have been linked to City but current frontman Steve Thompson is happy to see more competition for places.

"The manager's brought in a few acquisitions," said Thommo. "Jason came on against Wolves and got his goal, that's what he's like. He's a predator, that's what he's all about, scoring goals.

"It's great to have that in the team as well as to have some competition for places.

"New players coming in shouldn't bother you as a professional. We're part of a team. I've played in 28 games this season so far and I'm pretty sure I'll play in a lot more.

"But you've got to have the competition. Jason offers something that I don't. Chops offers something that Jason doesn't.

"You need that in your squad. You need to have players that are different to each other. That's what brings out the best in the team.

"And I think there's going to be another addition to the squad, another striker as well. It's all about adding and competition, of course, brings out the best in your own game."

And now Thompson is looking ahead to the weekend and a home game against Leicester. He thinks we deserved the luck at Wolves and now City must build on that massive win.

"I think maybe we deserved that winning goal as we had a couple of near chances. We all knew it was a huge result for us, now we've got to keep it going starting with Leicester.

"There's no point winning and then losing. We've been on an incredibly disappointing run from our point of view, for the fans, for everybody.

"But we see this now as an opportunity and as a starting point to turn it around. We've got to make sure that we keep it going."
